Oysterponds: Annual OHS fall Art Show and Sale Oct. 7

Last week I asked Jeffrey Lyons, author of several baseball trivia books, to check in and share some insight on the unraveling of his obsession, the Boston Red Sox. At the time he was hopeful but quiet. After I posted a Happy New Year to all my Jewish friends on Facebook, Jeffrey responded that the first day of the New Year was not a very happy one for him since it started off with the Tampa Bay Rays taking the wild card. Back in 1994, I remember writing that if you ran into an aphasic-looking man possibly in his PJs roaming the Sound beach and mumbling, it was most likely Jeffrey, suffering the side effects of 232 days without baseball. After last week’s results, I bet Orient’s favorite movie critic would have been happy for a repeat of the ’94 walkouts that eradicated all post-season baseball and the World Series. After all, it is only a game.

Speaking of wandering and aphasic, this week that might be Ron and Linda Apostle, who will be going through withdrawal from their favorite libation and the ritual of a morning run to Starbucks in Greenport. Since that establishment closed this week, Ron is hoping to round up some other Oysterponders and car-pool to Mattituck for his morning cup of Joe.

As Geoff Proud delivered a eulogy for Betty Rose on Wednesday, he quoted St. Francis of Assisi. When asked what he would do if he knew he’d be meeting the Lord that night, St. Francis said he would be right there in his garden tending to his flowers and his wildlife. As Geoff asked that question my thoughts went from the ethereal to the practical. I decided that if I were going to meet my maker I’d better get home and fold all the wash I left in baskets in the middle of the living room floor. After all, friend Elyse Romano — who always promised to head straight to my house and unclutter upon hearing that I encountered an emergency — is now doing her wonderful things in Vero and is too far away for a spontaneous tidy-up.

Barbara and Steve Schott are still exhilarated from the Sept. 10 nuptials of their daughter Elissa and Bob Peixoto. Bob and Steve and various family and friends traveled to Rehoboth, Mass., for the outdoor wedding at the Inn at Five Bridges, followed by a reception on its sprawling grounds. The newlyweds are tucked back in Taunton, Mass., after an amazing honeymoon in Australia. Congratulations!

The annual OHS local artists fall Art Show and Sale starts Friday night at 5 p.m. for members and artists and runs all weekend. Call 323-2480 for the exact time.

The ‘other Times’ wrote a story this week on the mysterious purchase of all the print copies of The Suffolk Times (thousands of them) and the speculation on which article someone was trying to squash/censor. I confess I heard the rumor that whoever did this really just wanted to make sure they didn’t miss the Oysterponds column. (As Hugh Sidey said, “A sense of humor is needed armor.”)
