Today in sports: Rematch of county finals for Mattituck girls

For the first time since last year’s controversial county championship, the Mattituck girls soccer team will face Center Moriches this afternoon on the road. The game is scheduled for 4 p.m.

Mattituck fans remember well how last year’s game finished, when the Tuckers lost 1-0 to the top-seeded Red Devils in the Class B county final. The lone goal came on a ball that bounced off the Mattituck goalkeepers’ knee when she was ruled to have been in the goal. It was tough to tell whether the entire ball crossed the goal line.

The goal stood for Center Moriches, which won its second straight title and beat Mattituck for the third time in the season.

The Red Devils are off to another strong season at 3-0-2. Mattituck is 4-2.

Tuesday’s game at Center Moriches is the first of two meetings between the teams.

The Tuckers come into the game off a 3-0 loss at home to Bayport-Blue Point Sept. 27. The Phantoms are in first place in League VII.
