Lydia David

Lydia David died Sept. 29 at San Simeon by the Sound Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Greenport, where she had resided since 2003. She was 75.

Born in 1935 to Roy and Lula Mae (Vail) Latham, she was raised in Orient and graduated from Greenport High School.

After graduating from Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School in New York, Ms. David worked in New York, California, Michigan and Philadelphia, Pa., as both a secretary and travel agent. In 1975, she returned to New York City to work as an executive secretary.

According to family members, Ms, David, who was divorced in 1980, met the many challenges of her battle with multiple sclerosis with strength and courage. She had many friends at San Simeon by the Sound, they said, greatly enjoyed the facility’s programs and served for one year as president of the Resident Council.

Ms. David is survived by her sisters, Rosemary Latham Barreda of Peru, South America, and Diana Latham of Orient.

A private graveside service is planned, with interment in the family plot at Orient Central Cemetery. Arrangements were handled by Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport.
