Oysterponds: Orient United Methodist Church celebrates Laity Sunday on Oct. 16

Wedding, take two, was a great success on Oct. 2, when Oysterponds’ own Aly Sabatino tied the knot with Ryan Golden at the Port Jefferson Country Club/Lombardi’s on the Sound. Aly, daughter of Linda and John, and Ryan, son of Christopher and Danielle, had planned their wedding for the last weekend in August but Mother Nature, AKA Irene, had the last laugh. Greenport’s Brin Klinge served as best man and East Marioneer Kristen McLaughlin was a bridesmaid. Rumor has it that the one that had the best time was John’s 87-year-old mother, who was queen of the dance floor. The newlyweds honeymooned in Quebec and are back in Orient, helping to renovate their new home, The Osprey Shop (proprietor Dick Keogh) circa 1960 or ’70s and The Little Old Gift House on the Corner (John Sabatino proprietor) circa 2000s. Congratulations to all and many wishes for happiness to one of “our kids” all grown up.

Speaking of our kids all grown up, congratulations to Kate Lauber Criss and her husband, Andy, on the arrival of Benjamin David Criss, born in the state of Washington on Sept. 16 weighing 7 1/2 pounds and measuring 19 1/2 inches. All excited about his entrance into the world are grandma Peg Lauber and her husband, Paul Kreiling, and grandpa Joel Lauber and his bride, Chris Hascoat Lauber.

Within days of his birth, Ben was introduced to fellow North Fork offspring Margo Borum, 3-month-old daughter of Kate Gould Borum and her husband, Noah. Both daddies are employed by Amazon. During that visit Uncle Jon Gould (who works in NYC law enforcement) was on the West Coast for a holiday also visiting his new niece. A belated congrats to Kate and Noah, grandma Jenny Gould and grandpa Tim Gould. All of these new babies make me feel really old.

The OHS traditional American craft series continues with quilting a Thanksgiving table runner. Classes are Oct. 29 and Nov. 5 and 15, 1-2:30p.m. The course is $50 ($45 for OHS members) plus a $20 materials fee. The instructor is master quilter Cathy Mathews, who promises not to disappoint. Call 323-2480.

Congratulations to the recently elected new officers of the Oysterponds Rod and Gun Club: Robert Sorenson, president; Kent McCarthy, secretary; and Tom Murray, treasurer.

This Sunday is Laity Sunday at Orient United Methodist Church and lay leader Bud Jackson has designed the 10 a.m. worship service, which will feature organ and cello renditions from Jason Cockerill and guest cellist Aidan Walker. As always the service is open to all.

It sure has been an interesting baseball season but the postseason is shaping up to be pretty much a non-event for Northeast/East Coast fans. Although I admit that being a Mets fan is humbling, there’s still an expectation the World Series will be played between teams whose uniforms we at least recognize. On the ferry Sunday (after a weekend in 87-degree Maine) I was trying to find out who was winning the Milwaukee/St. Louis game and was laughed at, as it seems the world has moved on to football (also a bad weekend for N.Y. fans). BTW, Miriam, ask Uncle Richard how he’s feeling about his Phillies now? They did, however, get to play three more games than my Mets. See you all at spring training.
