Today in sports: One more win and Tuckers are in

GARRET MEADE FILE PHOTO | Mario Arreola had a goal and an assist in Mattituck's 5-0 win over Wyandanch on Oct. 3.

Qualifying for the boys soccer playoffs is something that is taken for granted at Mattituck High School. Yet, the Tuckers still haven’t booked a place in the 2011 postseason.

Mattituck (8-5, 5-4 in Suffolk County League VII) has three regular-season games left in which to secure that sixth league win, which would serve as a ticket to the playoffs. The first of those final three games will be today in Wyandanch at 4:30 p.m.

Wyandanch (4-5, 4-5) has shown itself as a team not to be taken lightly. Since their 5-0 loss in Mattituck on Oct. 3, the Warriors have won three of four games, all by 2-1 scores over Hampton Bays, Center Moriches and Babylon.

The first Wyandanch-Mattituck meeting was cut short by lightning with about 20 minutes remaining. David Burkhardt and Mario Arreola had a goal and an assist each. The other goals were supplied by Ryan Finger, Kevin Williams and Kevin Izzo. Stephen Ostrowski made his first varsity start in goal and shared the shutout with Austin Scoggin.

Mattituck’s remaining two regular-season games after today will be at home versus Hampton Bays on Monday and at Center Moriches on Wednesday.
