Today in sports: Porters hope Amityville isn’t a horror

GARRET MEADE FILE PHOTO | Greenport/Southold/Mattituck/Shelter Island has been outscored by 101-26 in its last three games.

The Greenport/Southold/Mattituck/Shelter Island football team goes to Amityville today and hopes it will not be a horror. It is quite possible, though, that Halloween could come early for the Porters.

With two weeks remaining in the regular season, the playoffs are right around the corner. It seems all but certain, however, that the Porters will be spectators and not players.

The young Porters (1-5) have lost three straight games to Hampton Bays, Elwood/John Glenn and Mount Sinai. In those Suffolk County Division IV games, the 10th-place Porters were outscored by 101-26. For them to have any chance of reaching the postseason, they would have to beat both first-place Amityville (5-1) today and then Bishop McGann-Mercy (2-4) in their regular-season finale.

Tomasz Filipkowski, Greenport’s talented junior running back/linebacker, returned from an ankle injury and played in the team’s last game, a 25-13 loss to Hampton Bays. Filipkowski ran for 77 yards and a touchdown in addition to making seven tackles on defense.

Ryan Malone, a senior playing in his final home game, scored Greenport’s other touchdown and was responsible for 11 tackles.

But upsets are rare in Suffolk football. Amityville doesn’t look about to get knocked off as it prepares for the playoffs. The only blemish on the Warriors’ record is a 26-20 loss to Mount Sinai on Oct. 6. But Mount Sinai bounced back from that last Saturday, beating Elwood/John Glenn, 42-28. Da’rell Hatcher, a senior, ran for 366 yards and five touchdowns, both career-high figures, Newsday.com reported.
