Mattituck-Laurel: Athletic Booster Club to host poker tournament Nov. 5

Can you believe this is the last week of October? It’s also the time we get ready to celebrate an array of costumed children ringing our doorbells. Have a safe and fun Halloween as we say goodbye to October

Andrea Nydeggar, Mattituck High School’s student assistance counselor, accompanied the following students to the East End Youth Leadership Summit last week at Suffolk Community College: Helen Chen, Jenny Pautke, Alaina Robbins, Mirsa Perez, Britney Longley, Zev Carter, Christian Montgomery, Jacob Branker, Riley Dobbins and Gary Belmonte.

With colder weather creeping up, a book discussion group is a great way to pass the time. Bev Wowak invites everyone to participate in the next discussion on Nov. 29 at Mattituck-Laurel Library. Stop by and pick up a copy of “The Imperfectionists” by Tom Rachman. The discussion is open to all and begins at 7 p.m.

Bravo to the cast and crew of this year’s MHS Variety Show. Giving our students an opportunity to shine in the spotlight this year was adviser Deanna Ryan. Next year’s directors are Caleb Smith, Anne O’Rourke, Cydnie Piscatello and Shannon Gatz.

The Athletic Booster Club continues its efforts to raise money to support athletic programs at MHS. The club will host a Texas Hold ’em Tournament at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 5, at Long Island National Golf Club on Northville Turnpike in Riverhead. Registration and buffet start at 6 p.m. $100 fee includes tournament entry. Cash bar. Call 631-445-5526.

With the holiday season approaching quickly, the Booster Club also wants to remind everyone that a brick for the alumni garden makes a great gift. Bricks are also being accepted now as memorials or to honor retired or current faculty. Call 445-5526.

This week’s birthdays: Kieran Nish blows out 17 candles today; Laura Young and Kyle and Clayton Santillo celebrate on the 28th; Kyle Pumillo on the 29th; Emily Olsen Harbich on the 30th; and Caty Austin and Wayne Sailor cut their cakes on Nov. 1.

Some events to add to your calendar: Father Frank Pizzarelli from Hope House will visit Mattituck Tuesday, Nov. 15, to discuss drug and alcohol awareness. He will meet with students during a daytime assembly and with parents at 7 p.m. that evening. All community members are invited.

The junior high cast of “Law and Order: The Nursery Rhyme Unit” will perform Thursday and Friday, Nov. 17 and 18, at 7 p.m. in the auditorium. Tickets are $7 or a nonperishable food item for the student council’s annual food drive. Come out for an evening of puns and fun!
