Greenport: Greenport School host its Angel Tree starting Nov. 18

I know you’re all expecting me to start off, as I normally do, complaining about the weather, so I’m not going to do that. All I’ll say is that, as of today, there are only 231 days left until the first day of summer.

I have a thank-you to send out on behalf of the Greenport community that’s long overdue. For about 30 years, Carolyn Tamin has worked tirelessly to put together the annual Greenport Christmas parade. Her efforts start long before the holiday season each year and she’s put a smile on many a child’s face arranging Santa’s annual visit. Thank you, Carolyn, for everything.

Greenport Fire Department’s Phenix Hook & Ladder and Relief Hose companies are now orchestrating the parade. Captain Jenn Grilli of the former company is looking for volunteers to play characters in this year’s parade, which will be held Sunday, Dec. 11 (rain date: Dec. 18). She also needs people to dress up as clowns. Those 5 years of age or older are eligible to participate. If you’re willing, please give Jenn a call at 902-1543,

Greenport School will host its Angel Tree starting Nov. 18 to help out families with students in the school over the Christmas holiday. If you can help a local family, stop by and take an Angel from the tree, which will be set up in the school lobby. Angel gifts are due by Dec. 16, and can be dropped off at the school’s main office Please wrap all gifts and attach the original angel to each gift. If you’d like to assist a family in another way, you can also donate gift certificates to local grocery stores, which are very helpful. Contact school social worker Jillian Ruroede at 477-1950, ext. 220, with any questions.

Another year has gone by and Judy Terry and her brother Jim Thornhill would like to send a “happy 99 years young” birthday wish to their mom, Greenport native Elbertie (Bert) Thornhill. Bert, her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren will be together to celebrate her special day on Nov. 4.

Birthday wishes go out this week to Susan Fisher Tyler, Chris Doucett Sr. and Brian Lehmann on Nov. 3; Heidi Johanson on the 4th; Chris North on the 6th; Barbara Richter, Sean Furman, who will turn 2, and Suzie Opalenchuk on the 7th; my uncle Jack Heaney, who will celebrate his 80th birthday, on the 8th; and Tanya Gates on the 9th.

Belated anniversary wishes go out to Andrea and Mike Volinski, who celebrated their 25th on Oct. 18.

Celebrating another year of married life this week are Regina and George Cartselos, married 10 years on Nov. 4, and Sally and Ray Corwin, whose 35th anniversary is Nov, 5.
