Today in Sports: Two Mattituck teams vie for county titles

Tonight in both girls soccer and girls volleyball, the two schools will face off for their respective county championships. First up will be the girls soccer team at 6:30 p.m. at Diamond in the Pines in Coram. It’ll be a rematch of last year’s thriller, which didn’t end in favor of Mattituck.

Center Moriches (10-1-4) is the No. 1 seed and Mattituck (9-6-1) is the No. 2 in Class B.

The Red Devils will playing for their third straight county title.

Mattituck played Center Moriches tough in the regular season this year. The first game ended in a scoreless draw and Center Moriches won the second game 1-0. Needless to say, goals will be at a premium tonight.

The winner tonight advances to play the Nassau County champion Saturday.

At 8 p.m. tonight the Mattituck volleyball team faces Center Moriches for the Class C title at St. Joseph’s College in Patchogue. The Tuckers are the defending champions and will face a team they defeated 3-0 earlier this season.

The Tuckers advances to the finals off a 3-0 win over Port Jefferson in the semifinals.

Mattituck is in the county finals for the seventh time in eight years.

The winner today plays the Nassau County champion at noon Saturday at St. Joseph’s College.
