Edward W. Helinski

Lifelong Greenport resident Edward W. Helinski died at his home Nov. 6, 2011, at the age of 92.

He was born March 26, 1919, to Constance and Valentine Helinski. In his early years, Ed worked on various fishing boats in and around Greenport. During World War II he joined the U.S. Navy and, upon his honorable discharge, went to work for the Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company (A&P) in their meat department, rising to head meat manager.

He was a member of the American Legion, the Greenport Volunteer Fire Department, the Polish National Alliance and St. Agnes R.C. Church.

Predeceased by his wife, Clara A. Helinski, and his brother, Peter Helinski, he is survived by his daughters, Barbara P. Claps and Patricia C.A. Wysocki; his sister, Helen Karal; his brothers, John and Zigmund Helinski; and his grandchildren, Christina M. McElroy, Michael V. Claps and Robert W., Kady L., Jennifer K., Timothy S, and Abby N. Wysocki.

Visiting hours took place Nov. 8 at Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport. A Mass was held Nov. 9 at St. Agnes R.C. Church, also in Greenport. Interment followed at the church cemetery.
