Levy announces bulked-up SCPD presence for the holidays

Heading up-island this holiday season to visit relatives or go shopping? Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy wants you to know that you’ll be kept as safe as possible, as county police officers will be fanning out across Suffolk “in force” from Thanksgiving Eve through New Year’s Day.

On Black Friday, police patrols will be bulked up at malls, shopping centers and commercial thoroughfares throughout Suffolk’s five west end towns, which are patrolled by the county PD.

Thinking about swigging back one last glass of egg nog before leaving grandma’s? Well think twice. County cops are also planning to crack down extra hard this season on drunken drivers. But cops will also be focusing on seat belt use, distracted driving and cell phone usage, Mr. Levy announced this week in a press release.

“The department will also focus on high visibility patrols and enforcement in downtown bar areas and other licensed premises that attract large crowds,” the release reads.

“These enhanced patrols are put into place to ensure all of Suffolk County’s residents and visitors can enjoy their holiday season,” said Suffolk County Police Commissioner Richard Dormer. “[Police] will be out in force to create a safe atmosphere both on the roads and in downtown communities.”
