Job fair Monday for soon to be laid off Capital One workers

VERA CHINESE PHOTO | The Mattituck Capital One bank office will soon be closing its doors.

Just a few days before most of the people currently working at the Capital One bank center in Mattituck lose their jobs on Dec. 4, they’ll get a chance to hook up with potential employers.

The North Fork and Mattituck Chambers of Commerce are jointly sponsoring a job fair for Capital One employees at the bank building on the Main Road from 9 a.m. To 5 p.m. Next Monday, Nov. 28.

Employers from Riverhead and Southold Towns have been invited to participate.

“This is an excellent way for employers in the area to meet associates searching for employment now or in the near future,” said Donielle Cardinale, president of the Mattituck Chamber.

Capital One, which acquired North Fork Bank in 2006, is transferring the back office jobs to Melville or Richmond, VA. About 135 people will be let go on Dec. 4 and another 65 or so will laid off early next year, said Joanne Schmitt, a career center manager for the Lee Hecht Harrison company, which has been hired to provide job placement assistance for the bank’s workers.

“We know that there are employers who, if they’re not looking for workers now, will be in the future,” she said. “We know there is a pool of talent here and we’re trying to bring the two together.”

There’s no charge for job seekers or potential employers to participate in the event.
