Congratulations to Paul Torpey, who was recently awarded honorary membership in the American Society of Mechanical Engineers in recognition of his outstanding leadership in electric utility research. His work significantly advanced modern power systems that improved the quality of the profession.

Tune in to ‘The Challenge’ on MSG Varsity on Monday, Dec. 12, at 6:30 p.m. to see members of Greenport High School’s National Honor Society compete against students from Shoreham-Wading River. Kerri Hands, Zoe Vayer, Shawn Peterson, Mark Pagano and alternate Alexa Suess will represent Greenport. Parents, NHS adviser Carolyn Burke and principal Len Skuggevik accompanied the students on the trip to NYC to provide support.

Want to learn another language? Carolyn Burke has arranged a one-year course that will enable you to learn any language available through the Rosetta Stone program. The course costs $109, will begin early in 2012 and is open to community members from Greenport, East Marion and Orient. Contact Mrs. Burke at [email protected] for more information.

What kind of student athletes do we have at GHS? I’m glad you asked! I’m very pleased to report that GHS has received the Section XI Sportsmanship Award for fall sports including varsity field hockey, varsity football, varsity boys’ soccer, JV golf and varsity and JV girls’ soccer (the latter as combined sport with Southold High School).

In addition, Greenport’s own Todd Gulluscio received the Suffolk County field hockey coaches’ “Coach of the Year” title at a dinner at Villa Lombardi last week. Way to go, Todd!

First Baptist Church of Greenport’s Lilies of the Field Thrift Store is now open Thursdays, 10 a.m.-noon, and Saturdays 11 a.m.-1 p.m. All proceeds support their World Vision child.

I’m not sure exactly when it was (the caller didn’t supply a date), but here’s hoping Tanya Palmore had a wonderful day when she recently celebrated her 40th birthday.

Celebrating birthdays this week are Chris Golden, Rob Lehmann and Brittany Doucett on the 8th; Jeff Andrade and Camilo Torres on the 9th; Linda Owen, Mike Owen and Kay Kettering Welch on the 10th; Dantré Langhorne and Laura Riggins on the 11th; my cousin Shawn Cutts and Courtney Weber on the 12th; Jim’s aunt MaryAnn Dinizio on the 13th; and Kyle Tuthill on the 14th.

Happy 26th anniversary to Diane and Bernie Purcell on Dec. 8.
