Blotter: Bunch of burglaries and thefts from cars this week

Burglaries and thefts from cars were abundant in Southold Town this week.

• A Franklinville Road, Laurel, resident reported Jan. 9 that sometime overnight, someone had stolen a pair of Nikon binoculars, a GPS, a tool bag, a handicapped placard, a cellphone, a hat, prescription medications, a tape measure, a hitch receiver bolt and several keys from a GMC Sierra pickup parked in the driveway.

• An Aldrich Lane, Laurel, resident reported a GPS and an EZ Pass stolen from a car parked overnight between Jan. 8 and 9.

• Forty-seven dollars in cash was reported stolen from the Zamboni garage at the Mitchell Park ice skating rink in Greenport sometime between Jan. 9 and Jan. 10.

• An Old North Road, Southold, farmer reported that several truck batteries were taken from trucks in the field between Jan. 4 and Jan. 5.

• A Route 25, East Marion, resident reported an Apple laptop stolen from her house while she was out between 2:30 and 2:50 p.m. on Jan. 11.

• A Main Street, Greenport, resident reported that a 32-inch flat screen television was removed by someone who broke a window frame and entered the house sometime on Jan. 12.

• Three hundred dollars’ worth of copper was reported stolen from a residence on Little Neck Road in Cutchogue on Jan. 12.

• A Greenport woman reported that someone made off with a briefcase from her car while it was outside the Greenport 7-Eleven on Jan. 11. Police said the briefcase contained a DEA stamp, a prescription pad and a cardiology stethoscope.

• Stephen Toscano, 54, of East Quogue was charged with DWI after he was stopped for traffic violations while driving westbound on Route 48 just before 7 p.m. Jan. 15, police reported. He was taken to headquarters and held overnight.

• Colin Crowley, 41, of East Marion was arrested at his home Jan. 17 and charged with a felony count of first-degree criminal contempt plus criminal mischief and harassment. He was held for arraignment.

• On Monday, Jan. 16, police arrested David Rivas of Greenport on a misdemeanor count of second-degree criminal contempt. Police said Mr. Rivas called his ex-girlfriend in violation of a protection order issued in Bronx Supreme Court.

• Two Mattituck residents were taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center by the Mattituck Fire Department Rescue Squad on Jan. 9, following an accident at the intersection of Gabriella Court and Elijah’s Lane in Mattituck. Police said Jennifer Riley, 45, of Mattituck, failed to stop at a stop sign and crashed into a car driven by Lynnette Wigington, 33, of Mattituck. Ms. Wigington and her passenger, 12-year-old Jamia Shorten, were taken to the hospital.

• A Southold woman reported on Jan. 6 that she had given between $13,000 and $15,000 since Dec. 16, 2011, to people involved in a scam who told her she had won a Mega Million Sweepstakes. Police traced one of the phone calls from the scammers to Kingston, Jamaica. An investigation is continuing.

• Three separate drivers who parked their cars at the DEC boat ramp on Naugles Road in Mattituck on Jan. 13 reported the valve stems were cut off their vehicles’ tires while they were boating.

Those who are named in police reports have not been convicted of any crime or violation. The charges against them may later be reduced or withdrawn, or they may be found innocent.
