Mattituck-Laurel Column

Welcome to February! This is the month we celebrate Black History, hearts and flowers, our past presidents and American Heart Month. Starting tomorrow, you can purchase a “Go Red” lapel pin at Barth’s Pharmacy on Love Lane to raise awareness of the danger of heart disease — especially among women. Pins are $4 each while supplies last.

If you stop at Barth’s on Feb. 8, 10, 15, 17 or 29th between 10 a.m. and noon, you can also get a fitness assessment from Andrea Esposito of the NOFO Wellness Center. There’s also a free weekly raffle plus a special prize with a drawing on Valentine’s Day.

Looking for a distraction from the winter blahs? The Mattituck High School Art Partners will host a winter auction this Saturday, Feb. 4, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the high school. Proceeds will support visual arts scholarships, educational resources and community art events.

Abby Terry’s name was omitted last week from the list of students displaying their artwork this month at Parrish Art Museum in Southampton. A freshman at Mattituck High School, Abby was also the youngest student, at 13, to present a portfolio last spring.

An important date you may want to remember: “Jam the Gym” Coaches vs. Cancer Game is Friday, Feb. 10, starting at 4:30 p.m. with a JV basketball game. A varsity game will follow at 6:15. Come out, fight cancer and support our girls.

Another important date that’s farther away but worth putting on the calendar is the Mattituck Cutchogue PTSA’s Annual Fashion Show, slated this year for Wednesday, April 4. Watch this column for details as the date approaches.

Birthday wishes go this week to Jenna Gabelman on Feb. 4; Peter Ostrowski on the 5th; Jill Wowak, Michael Rolle and Brianna Hyland on the 6th; E.J. Danowski on the 7th; and Emily Gatz on the 8th.

MHS graduate Dan Letteriello is on a campaign to raise funds for team apparel for his college football team at Westfield State in Massachusetts. Donations of any size would be appreciated, but Dan is offering incentive rewards for donations of $25, $50 or $100. Call Dan at 631-680-4092 for details. Checks payable to Westfield State Football can be mailed to Westfield State Football Office, Woodward Center, 577 Western Ave., Westfield, MA 01085.

Carly Unger held a bake sale to raise money to help the dogs at the town shelter in Peconic. She and two friends baked everything themselves, set up a table at Mattituck Shopping Plaza and sold out. The funds raised went to purchase dog beds for the shelter animals. She planned a second sale recently, which was canceled due to bad weather, but the goodies were sold privately and raised enough to enable Carly to purchase more dog beds. Congratulations to a young entrepreneur with a really big heart!
