Quick response to fire on outside deck averts disaster at Greenport house

JULIE LANE PHOTO | Damage from a fire on the deck of a Greenport house Saturday night was limited thanks to a neighbor's warning and quick response by the Greenport Fire Department.

A quick response by the Greenport Fire Department saved a house from being destroyed by fire Saturday night, Southold Town Police reported.

Richard Ramsden, who was renting a home at 515 Carpenter Street for the weekend, told police he was awakened by a neighbor soon after 10 p.m. to tell him it was on fire. Mr. Ramsden had been barbecuing earlier and embers from the grill had landed on the outside deck.

The Fire Department quickly answered Mr. Ramsden’s call and put out the fire on the deck, police said.
