Sports Briefs: North Fork athletes performing well in college

COLLEGE SOFTBALL: Zilnicki putting up big numbers Jackie Zilnicki continues to be an offensive spark for Western Connecticut State University.

The senior center fielder from Riverhead, who has consistently been hitting in the three spot in the lineup for the Colonials, is batting .507 with 24 runs batted in, three doubles and three triples.

Zilnicki’s speed pressures opposing defenses. She has 10 stolen bases from 14 attempts.

The Colonials are 18-8 with a 1-3 record in the Little East Conference.

COLLEGE BASEBALL: Ascher strikes out six Steve Ascher, a freshman left-hander from Mattituck, allowed five hits and one run while striking out six batters over three innings for Oneonta State in a 4-2 win over New Paltz in 11 innings on April 7.

MEN’S LACROSSE: Stern assists Oneonta Daniel Stern of Shoreham had an assist for Oneonta State in an 11-6 loss to Cortland on April 7. He set up the game’s final goal by John DeOrdio with 1 minute 14 seconds left to play.

LITTLE LEAGUE: Opening day parade The Mattituck-Cutchogue Little League parade will start on Saturday at noon. The parade route will run from Veterans Park in Mattituck to Bay Avenue Park along Bay Avenue. Among the participants will be New York Islanders mascot Sparky the Dragon. Opening day ceremonies will be held following the parade. The league’s 45th season will then begin with a boys majors division baseball game at the Bay Avenue field at 1 p.m. Sunday is the rain date for the parade.

MEN’S SOFTBALL: Scorekeepers wanted The Riverhead Recreation Department is looking for young people 16 years old or older who are interested in a summer job keeping scores of men’s softball games. Anyone interested may call Thomas Filgate at (631) 727-5744, ext. 28.
