Gertrude King Reeves

Gertrude King Reeves died April 20, 2012, at San Simeon by the Sound Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Greenport. She was 99 years old.

Gertrude King Reeves

She was born in Orient on March 30, 1913, to Edwin and Fanny (Case) King and was raised there with her four sisters.

Gert was a lifelong resident of Orient, and she graduated from Greenport High School in 1932. She had been married to Robert Reeves of Greenport for 51 years when he passed in 1983.

Gert’s favorite hobby was working in her flower gardens. She was an avid reader, did word puzzles daily and was a lifelong chocolate lover. While at San Simeon, she enjoyed playing bingo and playing the horse races. She was also a member of the Oysterponds Historical Society and the DAR.

She was baptized at Orient Congregational Church in 1913 and joined the church in 1927. She was the longest-standing member of the church and had been active in church activities for much of her life.

Her interest in the fire department is due to members of her family, starting with her grandfather when the department started in 1893-94, and including her father, husband, son, grandson and great-grandson, and other family members.

Gert was predeceased by her husband, Bob; her son Edwin; and three of her four sisters – Peggy Baker, Edwina Gorman and Vera Wilson. She is survived by her sister Frances Demarest; her daughter, Jerie Newman (Ken), and her son, Bob Reeves (Marge); her daughter-in-law, Laurie Reeves; eight grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Donations may be made in her memory to Orient Congregational Church, P.O. Box 425, Orient, NY 11957 or to the Orient Fire Department, P.O. Box 130, Orient, NY 11957.

A celebration of Gert’s life will be held at a date to be announced.
