Ida Arnold Vail

Longtime East Marion resident Ida Arnold Vail died April 18 at San Simeon by the Sound Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Greenport. She was 93.

She was born Dec. 28, 1918, to Gottfried and Ethel (Seaman) Arnold. After graduating from Greenport High School in 1938, she lived in Brooklyn for several years and worked as a hairdresser.

She married John S. Vail in East Marion in May 1947 and together they owned and operated Vail Photo Studio on Main Street in Greenport for over 40 years.

Ms. Vail was a longtime member of the East Marion Craft Club and was active in East Marion Baptist Church. After retiring, family members said, she enjoyed traveling to visit them.

Ms. Vail was predeceased by her husband; her sons, James and John; and her siblings, Gertrude Milde, Helen Hansen and Frank, John and George Arnold. She is survived by her sisters, Ruth Hommel and Catherine Prackelt.

Graveside services took place April 21 at East Marion Community Cemetery, the Rev. Clyde Mellinger officiating.

Donations may be made to the East Marion Fire Department Rescue Squad.
