According to village documents, the proposed legislation aims to improve the quality of life for renters, as well as prevent overcrowding and deter blight.
In addition to completing inspections that will determine how many people can occupy a rental property, landlords will be required to provide the village with a contact list of their tenants.
While the proposed permits and renewals will cost $100 per year, the fee will be waived under certain situations, such as if the rental will provide housing for low income families.
If the law is approved, first-time violators could face a fine between $1,500 to $5,000 and second violations carry a fine between $2,500 to $10,000. All violators could also face up to six months imprisonment.
The Village Board kept the public hearing open and will send the draft law back to its code committee for further review.
