William Oscar Schulz

Longtime Greenport resident William Oscar Schulz died Aug. 5 at Eastern Long Island Hospital. He was 55.

He was born Sept. 5, 1956, in Long Beach, N.Y., to Hazel (Burn) and Oscar Schulz and graduated from Bayport High School. He served in the U.S. Army military police for three years at the rank of specialist fourth class.

Mr. Schulz worked for 29 years at the Riverhead Correctional facility as a sergeant investigator in the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department.

He was a former member of the Bayport Fire Department, former coach of the Peconic Panthers football team and a former member of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department Honor Guard.

He enjoyed restoring antique cars, drag-racing and clamming.

Predeceased by his baby daughter, Elizabeth, in 1991, Mr. Schulz is survived by his wife, Karen, of Greenport; his daughter Katherine of Fishkill, N.Y., and his son, William Jr., of Greenport; his mother, Hazel Schulz of Ocala, Fla.; his future son-in-law, Adam Hukill; and his siblings Evelyn, of Ocala, Margaret, of Selden, and Thomas, of Bay Shore. He was also predeceased by his brother John in 1984 and his father in 2001.

Visiting hours took place Aug. 8 at Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport, where a service was held Aug. 9 in the chapel, Father Thomas Murray officiating. Interment was at St. Agnes Cemetery in Greenport.

Memorial donations may be made to Eastern Long Island Hospital or the North Fork Animal Welfare League.
