Flag placing event set for Cochran Park on Tuesday, 9/11

There will not be a big 9/11 ceremony in Jean Cochran Park this year, like there was last year on the 10-year anniversary of the terrorist attacks. But local residents are being invited to place flags at the park on Tuesday night.

The small flags will be provided for those who visit the park, which is located on Peconic Lane in Peconic, between 5 and 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Notice of the quiet memorial event came from Tracey Orlando, who spearheaded last year’s memorial event. She is the daughter of Jim Miller of Miller Environmental, who had a 35-foot Osprey sculpture commissioned from sculptor Roberto Julio Bessin.

The Osprey sculpture was moved to the park last year to stand as a memorial to those who died in the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
