Found with stolen bike, he’s instead busted on pot charge

A Greenport man who police said stole a bicycle earlier in the week caught a break when the owner decided not to press charges. But the man’s luck ran out when police reportedly found he was carrying four small “dime bags” of marijuana.

The bike owner stopped an officer on patrol along South Street in Greenport Thursday morning and said he had just seen Anthony Chance, 31, riding the bike stolen out of his yard a few nights earlier, police said. As the officer and the bike owner spoke, Mr. Change arrived on the bike. The owner, who police said was glad to have the bike back, did not want to file a complaint.

But during the investigation, police reported finding marijuana in Mr. Chance’s possession. He was taken into custody, charged with a violation count of unlawful possession of marijuana and released for a future court appearance.
