Town offering help to hurricane victims

Southold Town is planning several measures this week to help residents cope with the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.

The town’s transfer station and compost facility on Cox Lane in Cutchogue will remain open on Election Day, Nov. 6 from 7 a.m. To 5 p.m. to accept trash and storm-related debris. The transfer station is usually closed on Election Day.

The Town Trustees office in the Town Hall Annex on Youngs Ave. will be open for extended hours to assist residents dealing with permits for structures near the water. On Thursday evening, Nov. 8, the office will be staffed from 5 to 8 p.m.and on Saturday, Nov. 10 from 9 a.m. to noon. Phone lines in the Town Hall Annex are down, but trustees will be on-hand during the extended office sessions to answer questions from residents.

Both the trustees and the state DEC are waiving permit fees for work done to shore up property in the wake of the storm. Emergency permit applications are not yet available on the town’s website, but a pdf copy of the application is available here and at the end of this post.

The town highway department is beginning a roadside cleanup of limbs and branches no greater than ten feet in length and leaves in brown paper bags. For years the town offered a fall clean up, but discontinued that several years ago for budgetary concerns.

The cleanup will begin in Orient Point and work west to Laurel.
