Southold modifies highway budget, mostly to cover Sandy cleanup
The Southold Town Board approved budget modifications last week for the highway department totaling just over $124,000, primarily to pay for post-Hurricane Sandy cleanup.
Highway Superintendent Pete Harris said his department had the money available in other budget lines primarily because crews were not needed to plow roads during last year’s mild winter.
The highway department also received approval last Tuesday to purchase two new three-quarter-ton pickup trucks, one with a snowplow attachment.
One of the trucks will be purchased with funds that had been set aside to purchase road-clearing rock salt last winter. The cost of the other will be drawn from the snow equipment budget line.
