Alvan Hempstead Terry

Longtime Peconic resident Alvan Terry of Wilmington, N.C., died Dec. 25 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. He was 75.

He was born in Greenport to Burton L. and Florence (Hempstead) Terry. He was a highway foreman with the Suffolk County Department of Public Works for over 29 years and proudly served for 50 years as a member of Southold Fire Department Eagle Hook & Ladder Co. He also loved to travel, enjoyed bowling and was an avid NASCAR fan, according to family members.

Mr. Terry is survived by his wife of 54 years, Carol (née Fleming); two sons, Kevin, of Southold, N.Y., and Mark, of Lewisville, N.C.; one daughter, Jacquelyn Bruckheimer of Hampton, Va.; his sister Marie Glover of Mattituck, N.Y.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister Joyce Smith.

A memorial service was held Dec. 29 at Wilmington Funeral and Cremation Service.
