Southold police: Unlicensed driver’s car had stolen plates

An 34-year-old Peconic man is facing stolen property charges after he was found to be driving a car with stolen plates during a traffic stop Tuesday in Mattituck, police said.

Julian Javier-Melchor was pulled over by police just after 9 a.m. on Main Road, where an officer found the car’s tags had been reported stolen from a parked vehicle elsewhere, Southold Town police said.

Mr. Javier-Melchor was charged with criminal possession of stolen property, aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, and for having no insurance or registration, police said.

He’s also facing numerous traffic violations, officials said.
