A section of Route 48 in Southold was expected to be closed most of Saturday after a car struck a deer and then knocked a utility pole down across the highway earlier in the day, town police said.

The North Road between Boisseau Avenue in Southold and Albertson Lane in Greenport was shut down as officials waited for a Long Island Power Authority crew to replace the pole, police said.

According to a report, Craig Durland, 39 of Mattituck hit a deer and then the utility pole shortly before 6 a.m. Snapped off at the base, the pole blocked both lanes of travel.

Mr. Durland was treated at the scene by the Greenport Fire Department Rescue Squad and taken to Eastern Long Island Hospital as a precaution, police said.
