Edith Sherwood

Edith Sherwood of Greenport died Jan. 3 at San Simeon by the Sound Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation. She was 92 and had lived at the facility for two years.

She was born in Greenport July 26, 1920, to Susan (Wiggins) and John W. Edwards and was a member of Greenport High School’s class of 1938. She graduated in 1939 from St. Mary’s School for Nurses and in 1943 from St. John’s Hospital School of Nursing.

While serving in the U.S. Army from 1945 to 1946, she attended the Military School of Neuropsychiatry, attaining the rank of second lieutenant, and was a nurse in the neuropsychiatric unit at Mason General Hospital in Brentwood, N.Y. She was awarded the American Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal and Meritorious Service Unit Plaque.

She later worked until 1951 at Eastern Long Island Hospital in Greenport, on both private and general ward duty. She married Jack Sherwood in Greenport Feb. 5, 1949.

She was a member of First Baptist Church of Greenport. Family members said she enjoyed baking, gardening, reading and traveling.

Predeceased by her husband in 2012, Ms. Sherwood is survived by her son, Jeff, of Malvern, Pa.; her daughters, Jeremy Neff of Homosassa, Fla., and Jennifer, of Colchester, Conn.; and four grandchildren.

A service will be held Monday, Jan. 14, at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Greenport, the Rev. Thomas LaMothe officiating. Arrangements were handled by Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport.
