Southold Town detectives are investigating the death of an apparently homeless man, whose body was found in a wooded area near the Long Island Rail Road track west of Factory Avenue in Mattituck Sunday night.

The death of the man, whom police described only as Hispanic, is not believed to be suspicious, said Southold Police Chief Martin Flatley. The body was discovered shortly before 9 p.m. Sunday a few hundred feet west of Factory Avenue, authorities said.

Chief Flatley said an initial investigation by Southold officers at the scene indicated the victim had been living outdoors.

The Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s Office is assisting in the investigation and will be conducting an autopsy Monday, Chief Flatley said.

No cause of death has been determined and police are “still working on identifying” the victim, Chief Flatley said.
