James M. Prendergast Sr.

James M. Prendergast Sr. of Riverhead died at home on Jan. 25. He was 80 years old.

He was born Feb. 19, 1932, in Cutchogue to Michael and Margaret (McBride)Prendergast. After graduating from Riverhead High School, class of 1951, he served in the U.S. Navy from 1952 to 1954. He married Marion Troyan on Nov. 1, 1958, at St. Isidore R.C. Church in Riverhead. He worked for New York Telephone for 33 years.

Mr. Prendergast was a lifetime member of the New York Telephone Pioneers and attended St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church in Riverhead. He was an avid reader who also enjoyed fishing , antiquing and car restoration.  He was a man of few words but one with many talents.

He is survived by his wife, Marion, of Riverhead; his children, Dr. Theresa Prendergast-Chatpar (Dr. Prem Chatpar) of Old Brookville, Laureen Prendergast of Patchogue and James M. Prendergast Jr. (Tamara) of Georgia; and three grandchildren, Elizabeth Chatpar, Madison and Jake Prendergast. He was predeceased by his parents.

The family received visitors Jan. 28 at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral Mass was held Jan. 29 at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church, followed by interment at the church cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the, Peconic Land Trust or Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County Marine Science Program.
