George Louis Cavagnaro

George Louis Cavagnaro, known as a kind man with an endearing sense of humor, died Feb. 5, 2013, at Avow Hospice in Naples, Fla., at age 90. The longtime Southold resident had also been a part-time resident of Naples for the past 13 years.

He was born Feb. 22, 1922, in Richmond Hill, N.Y., to Nicholas and Mary (Rogally) Cavagnaro. Following graduation from Pace University he served in the U.S. Air Force from 1942 to 1946, attaining the rank of staff sergeant.

Mr. Cavagnaro was the Vice President of Consolidated Baling Machine Company for over 30 years, a family-owned business located in Brooklyn. He was a member of the American Legion and Knights of Columbus and was a Eucharistic Minister at St. Patrick R.C. Church in Southold. He enjoyed skiing, photography and the outdoors.

He was married for almost 50 years to Jane (Carr) Cavagnaro, who predeceased him in 1998. He married Marilyn Weiss on May 6, 2000. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn; his two sons, Bill Cavagnaro of Memphis, Tenn., and George Cavagnaro (Jayne) of Atlanta, Ga.; his two daughters, Linda Matteini (Stephen) of Greenport, N.Y., and Irene Treiber (Peter) of Sea Cliff, N.Y.; 16 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.

Arrangements were handled by Coster-Heppner Funeral Home in Cutchogue, where the family will receive visitors Friday, Feb. 8, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, Feb. 9, at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick Church in Southold, followed by interment at the church cemetery.

Donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
