Audrey (Reinhart) Vail

Longtime Mattituck resident Audrey (Reinhart) Vail died Feb. 12 at San Simeon by the Sound Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation after a full, happy and blessed life.

She was born June 16, 1927, in Huntington Station, N.Y., to Jacob F. and Wilhelmina (Hake) Reinhart. For several years as a young girl she lived with her family in Peconic, where she met her future husband, Floyd Vail, her brother’s good friend. Audrey graduated from Huntington High School and worked with The Equitable Life Insurance Company in NYC.

On July 18, 1948, she and Floyd were married in a small chapel attached to St. Hugh’s Catholic Church in Huntington Station, N.Y. They were married for nearly 65 years, living in the same home on Bungalow Lane, where Audrey was a caring mother, neighbor and friend.

Audrey worked for 16 years as a volunteer and employee at the library of Sacred Heart School in Cutchogue (now Our Lady of Mercy Regional School). She was then assistant to the children’s librarian at Mattituck-Laurel Library for 11 years. It gave her a great deal of pleasure to help children in the library. Audrey received the sacraments of the Catholic faith at Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church in Mattituck for all her married life. She enjoyed collecting old keys and locks. Audrey was very proud of her seven grandchildren and enjoyed family gatherings.

Surviving are her loving husband, Floyd; children Gwendolyn Cukierski (Mark) of Mystic, Conn., Susan Tuthill (Ralph) of Mattituck and Jonathan (Karen), of Franklin, Mass.; seven grandchildren, Steven and William Cukierski, Kristin and Kevin Tuthill, and Kelly, Connor and Jack Vail; and one great-grandchild, Smith Cukierski. Audrey was predeceased by her sister, Jean (Reinhart) Beyer, brother, Jacob Reinhart Jr., son Floyd Richard Vail Jr. and granddaughter Sarah Tuthill.

The family received friends Feb. 15 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. The Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated Feb. 16 at Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church in Mattituck by Msgr. Joseph Staudt. Private interment will be at Cutchogue Cemetery.

Memorial donations in Audrey’s name may be made to San Simeon by the Sound, 61700 Route 48, Greenport, NY 11944, or to Mattituck-Laurel Library, P.O. Box 1437, Mattituck, NY 11952.
