Dennis J. Carey Jr.

Greenport resident Dennis J. Carey Jr. died Feb. 26 at The Shores at Peconic Landing. He was 95.

Mr. Carey was born in Brooklyn Jan. 5, 1918, to Dennis J. and Margaret (Collins) Carey. He was educated at St. Francis Preparatory School, St. John’s University and St. John’s University School of Law. 

He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and the Korean War, achieving the rank of captain, and was awarded the Bronze Star and the Air Medal.

Mr. Carey married Catherine Clare McDonald April 4, 1953, at St. Vincent Ferrer in New York City. He was president of Peerless Petro Chemicals, Inc. and was affiliated with St. Agnes R.C. Church in Greenport, the Knights of Malta and Knights of the Holy Sepulchre. He enjoyed golf and reading, according to family members, and was a member of Sands Point Golf Club, Westhampton Country Club and Lost Tree Club.

Mr. Carey was predeceased by his son Denis J. Carey III in 2009 and by his brothers Edward, Hugh, John and George. He is survived by his wife; his sons Robert J., of South Orange, N.J., Gregory C., of Clarksville, Md., and Geoffrey P. (Diana), of New York City; his daughter, Cynthia Carey LaLone (Charles) of Philadelphia; his brother Martin, of Glen Cove; and eight grandchildren.

Visiting hours took place March 1 at Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport. A funeral Mass was celebrated by the Rev. Thomas Murray March 2 at St. Agnes R.C. Church. Burial with honors took place March 4 at Calverton National Cemetery.
