Cops: Skeet shooting not illegal in Southold Town

A Cutchogue man “became irate” with a Southold police officer Saturday after the cop told him a group of skeet shooters nearby weren’t breaking the law, according to a police report.

The man called police at about noon to report people standing on the beach shooting skeet behind his home. An officer arrived at the scene and saw three people standing below the high tide mark shooting out over the water, which is legal in Southold Town.

The officer told the complainant that the shooters weren’t doing anything illegal. The man became angry with the officer and said he would call Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota about the shooters, according to the report. The man said he no longer needed the police’s help, saying “Southold Town makes up laws as we go,” according to the report.
