Gloria Elena Ways

Gloria Elena Ways, née Serrano, died of complications from pneumonia on Wednesday, March 20, 2013, at Eastern Long Island Hospital in Greenport, N.Y. She would have been 86 years old in July, having been born in the Philadelphia, Pa., area. Her husband, George H. Ways, and parents, Ray and Helen (Schaeffer) Serrano predeceased her, as did her brother, Raphael Serrano.

Her children Noel, of Beverly, Mass., Lisa, of California, and Gregory, of New Mexico; daughter-in-law Betsy; and grandchildren BenHanan and Charissa Ways, all of Beverly, Mass., all grieve the loss of this remarkable woman. Always having an eye for beauty, she was a lifelong artist who painted mostly in watercolor and some in acrylics and beautifully appointed her homes. Her generous heart reached out not only to her family but to several organizations that care for people and some for animals, too. She volunteered in community organizations to help those less fortunate. In her years as a young adult, before she had children, she was a flight attendant and consequently met her husband, who was a flight engineer for Trans World Airlines. Until the time of her death she continued to maintain friendships from her flight attendant years.

In lieu of a formal service, there will be an informal memorial reception at Peconic Landing, 1500 Brecknock Road, Greenport, N.Y., on Saturday, April 6, from 2 to 4 p.m. Several pieces of her artwork will be on display. Peconic Landing/Brecknock Road is directly off Sound Avenue, Route 25.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Homes.

This is a paid notice.
