Arrest made in another missing person case

Charles Matthews

In a case frighteningly similar to the Ashley Murray disappearance in February, Southold police received a report Monday morning of a 14-year-old Mattituck area girl who apparently disappeared sometime overnight after leaving a note behind.

But unlike the Ashley Murray case, police have made an arrest, accusing an 18-year-old Shirley man of taking the girl, an acquaintance, to a SUNY college campus in Westchester.

After police located the girl in a dormitory room late Tuesday afternoon, the department, with the assistance of SUNY police, arrested Charles Matthews of Shirley on misdemeanor counts of endangering the welfare of a child and obstructing governmental administration.

The second charge stems from Mr. Matthews’ refusal to provide investigators with information when asked about the missing girl’s whereabouts, police said.

He was released on $250 cash bail.
