Rodney Kenneth Wells

Rodney Kenneth Wells of Greenport died at his home in the village on May 7, 2013, at the age of 104. He was a direct descendant of the original Wells family, one of Southold’s First Settlers.

He was born July 18, 1908, in Peconic to Carrie L. Weller and John DeForest Wells and attended Greenport schools. During World War II, he served with the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary.

For 46 years, he was employed by the Village of Greenport as a laborer, lineman, records keeper and accountant for the Greenport Utilities Department. He also served one year as the superintendent.

In the community, he was a member of the Greenport Fire Department and its Eagle Hose Company and the Exempt Fireman’s Association; was a charter member of the Isle-N-ders (camping club); and was a trustee of the former Presbyterian church in Greenport. He later attended Southold United Methodist Church.

Professionally, he was a member of CSEA, AFSCME, M.E.O.A.U. and the Retired Public Employees Association.

During free time, he and his wife enjoyed camping. They built their first travel trailer from Popular Mechanics magazine plans. They traveled to 47 states and Canada — first by car, then by travel trailers — and made one cross-country trip in a pickup with a cap. Their last unit was a van they completely customized on their own.

Predeceased by his wife, the former Dorothy M. Whittington, whom he married April 27, 1930, in Jamesport, and a son, William Lester Wells, he is survived by a daughter, Dorothy Wells Faucon of Greenport; a daughter-in-law, Barbara Wells; a sister, Marjorie Wells Lellman of Florida; a brother, Russell C. Wells of Riverhead; seven grandchildren: Gary B., Rodney V., Gregg W. and Jamie Faucon, Vickie Wells, Lisa Wells Martell and Kevin Wells; great-grandchildren Marcia Faucon Luba, Jason, Donna Faucon Borger, Kristie Faucon Welch, Jessica, Nicole, Hailey and Zachary Faucon, Gabbi Martell and Kevin Wells Jr.; and great-great-grandchildren Kendra and Riley Luba and Carson Wells Faucon and Callie B. Faucon. He was predeceased by siblings J. Lester Wells, Allan Wells and Robert S. Wells.

Memorial services will be announced and interment will be at Cutchogue Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are being handled by DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Homes.

Memorial donations to the Greenport Fire Department Rescue Squad, East End Hospice or Southold United Methodist Church would be appreciated.
