While some roads puddled up as the heaviest of rains fell Friday during the remnants of Tropical Storm Andrea, things appeared to be dried out on the North Fork Saturday morning.

Front Street in Greenport saw a few inches of water cover the roadway Friday evening in the lead up to high tide at 10:40 p.m., but the road was dry as of 7:30 a.m. Saturday morning and hot coffee was being served up at Aldo’s cafe.

Some parts of Long Island saw upwards of 5 inches, with more than 4 inches falling across parts of the North Fork, according to news reports. Parts of major highways to the west were also closed to traffic Friday night.

Riverhead Highway Superintendent George Woodson said about 4 1/2 inches fell over Riverhead Town, with puddling from Wading River to Jamesport.

“But the drains did their jobs,” he said Saturday. “The drains are only rated for an inch a rain an hour, so with the heavy rain yesterday and downpours last night, things started to puddle up. Mother Nature, you can’t beat it; you just try to keep up at times.”

The National Weather Service reports weather will be mostly cloudy Saturday, with high temperatures reaching about 76 degrees and a low of 57. Sunday will be mostly sunny, with a high of 76 and low of 59. There’s a a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms Monday.
