Two hundred and twenty sailors in 186 boats from seven East End yacht clubs converged on Southold Bay to participate in Southold Yacht Club’s annual Carol Smith Regatta last Thursday and Friday. Named after a former club member, school teacher and avid Sunfish sailor, the event consisted of the 38th annual Peconic Bay Midget and Junior Sunfish Championships as well as competition in the 420, Laser and Opti classes.

Racing throughout the regatta was intense and at times only a few points separated the leaders. The closest competition was in the Peconic Bay Junior Sunfish Championship where two Mattituck sailors, Henry Potdevin and James Orioli, tied for first place with seven points each after four close races. Potdevin won the tiebreaker and was awarded the championship.

The tandem of Potdevin and Jason Scalia (six points) led a Mattituck Yacht Club sweep of the top three places in the Peconic Bay Midget Sunfish Championship. Christina Tomao and Madison Leslie were second with nine points. Gianna Orioli and Emma Clifford finished six points behind them in third.

Dan Sullivan of the Southold Yacht Club was the Laser Radial Champion with 23 points from seven races.

Ben Honig of the Old Cove Yacht Club was the top sailor in the Opti White class, taking three points from two races.
