Elderly woman attacked by family dog

An elderly Greenport woman was hospitalized Thursday after being attacked by the family dog for no apparent reason, Southold police said.

Around 2 p.m. officers responded the woman’s Bridge Street home after receiving a report of a person being attacked by a dog inside the home, according to a police report. Upon arriving the 88-year-old victim was found with bite marks to her leg, back and stomach, police said.

Another family inside the house was able to help the woman in getting the dog off of her and caged prior to the officer’s arrival, the report stated.

She was taken to Eastern Long Island Hospital for treatment, police said.

The hospital would not release an update on the woman’s status as of Thursday morning.

It appeared the dog attacked for no apparent reason, however family members stated that this was not the first incident that the dog attacked a person, police said.

The dog is contained in the house, is physically OK and is being watched, a family member said.
