Gloria Miriam Elmaleh Fultz

Gloria Miriam Elmaleh Fultz died Oct. 11, 2013, in Greenport, surrounded by her loved ones. She was 86 years old.

Gloria was born June 25, 1927, in Mogador, French Morocco. She came to the United States during World War II with her parents and four siblings to escape religious persecution. She attended Lawrence High School in Cedarhurst, N.Y., and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in languages and philosophy from the University of Wisconsin and a Masters of Education from Hofstra University. She worked as an elementary school teacher and, in 1958, introduced an experimental program in conversational French for third-graders. Gloria volunteered in Senator Robert Kennedy’s office, creating projects that advocated for children with disabilities and also performed charity work at the Opportunity Shop in Greenport, a thrift store run by Eastern Long Island Hospital.

Gloria was active for many years in several local bridge clubs and was regarded highly by fellow members for her skill. She also had a passion for Moroccan cooking, a staple in her home and among her family. She created a recipe for cHarissa, a deliciously unique Moroccan-influenced food seasoning. Gloria and her husband, Earl, recently began selling cHarissa in select markets and on the Web, having fallen in love with its versatility more than 25 years ago.

Gloria is survived by her husband of 50 years, Earl L. Fultz of Greenport, and three brothers, Victor, Leonard and Stanley Elmaleh. She also leaves behind her children, Michael Sack Elmaleh and Kerry Sack; a niece, Lisa Craig; and five grandchildren, Joseph Sack, Mika Cross, Molly McLaughlin, Lindsay Sack and Susannah Sack. She is also survived by two great-grandchildren, Camryn and Jayven Beaver.

The family wishes to extend its gratitude to East End Hospice and Peconic Landing.

Arrangements were handled by Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport.
