The Southold Police Department was awarded by AAA recently for efforts its taken to increase safety on the roads.

Chief Martin Flatley, as well as secretarial assistant Regina Blasko, attended an annual conference held by AAA in East Meadow. The organization’s local affiliate, AAA New York, offered up a total of 64 awards, including 18 in the ‘gold’ category, which Southold P.D. earned.

The department was recognized for its role in implementing STOP DWI – which stands for Special Traffic Operations Program while Driving While Intoxicated – as well as a child car seat safety program. The DWI program was implemented in conjunction with Suffolk County Police Department and Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, which provides funding for two full-time assistant district attorneys reserved for handling DWI cases.

In addition, no pedestrian fatalities have been reported in the past year.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo was given the AAA organization’s top award for passing legislation to combat texting and driving, which included the creation of ‘texting zones’ on highways.
