Anthony Joseph Bernhard

Longtime Orient resident Anthony Joseph Bernhard died Nov. 9. He was 83 years old.

He was born Dec. 7, 1929, in Brooklyn to Lillian (Russo) and Frank Bernhard and later attended John Jay College in New York City. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps for five years, achieving the rank of staff sergeant and receiving two Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart. Following his military service, Mr. Bernhard was a detective with the New York City Police Department.

He is survived by his wife, Irene; his son, Keith, of New York City; his sister, Eleanor Cinquemani; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

The family will receive visitors Sunday, Nov. 17, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport, where a wake will be held at 3:30 p.m. A funeral Mass will take place Monday, Nov. 18, at 10 a.m. at St. Agnes R.C. Church in Greenport. Cremation was private. Burial will take place at Calverton National Cemetery at a date to be determined.
