Monica J. Grigonis

Monica J. Grigonis of Southold died Nov. 19, 2013. She was 92 years old.

She was born June 7, 1921, to Charles and Mary (Jernick) Grigonis. Upon graduating from Southold High School, Monica attended Brown’s Business School in Hempstead. She was employed by the Manufacturers Hanover Trust Co. in New York City for three years.

For three years, Monica lived in Cleveland, Ohio, where she was employed by a division of the Chrysler Corporation. She returned to Southold in 1948, joining the former Southold Savings Bank and completing several courses offered by the American Institute of Banking. She also attended National Cash Register Programming School in Dayton, Ohio.

On Jan. 16, 1964, she became the first woman elected assistant mortgage officer at the bank, where she worked for 35 years, retiring July 1, 1983.

She was a member of St. Patrick R.C. Church in Southold and  loved to travel.

Monica is survived by her siblings Margaret Fox of Alabama, Richard, of Southold, and Patricia J. McNeil of Portville, N.Y., as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her siblings Charles, Mary Neese, Anne, William and George.

The family received friends Nov. 22 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold. The Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated Nov. 23 at St. Patrick R.C. Church by Father Peter Garry. Interment was at the church cemetery.

Memorial donations to Riverhead Care Center and Southold Fire Department would be appreciated.
