Yvonne Regina Walker

Former Greenport resident Yvonne Regina Walker, a longtime resident of Stamford, Conn., died Dec. 31, 2013, at Calvary Hospital in the Bronx. She was 73.

Becky, as she was known to her family, was born Nov. 12, 1940, to Josephine Watkins-Johnson. She grew up on Kaplan Avenue in Greenport and attended Greenport High School. As a teenager, she played piano at the AME Zion Church in Greenport and ran an informal business making and selling pizza and baked goods to family and friends.

Ms. Walker earned associate and bachelor’s degrees in nursing and graduated from St. Mary’s School of Pediatric Nursing in Bayside as well as Glen Cove School of Practical Nursing. She became a registered nurse and held positions at St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital in New York City, the V.A. Hospital in West Haven, Conn., and other health facilities in Stamford, Conn., Poughkeepsie, N.Y., and Philadelphia. She also attended modeling school in New York City.

Ms. Walker owned several vintage cars and family members said she enjoyed baking, playing piano and guitar for her nursing patients and friends and touring mansions and professionally decorated homes.

Predeceased by her brother Wendel Watkins and her stepfather, Ralph Watkins, she is survived by her mother and her brother Thomas Watkins Sr., both of Greenport; her sister, Donna Watkins of Southport, Conn., and Greenport; and many other relatives and friends.

The family received visitors Jan. 6, 2014, at Unity Funeral Chapel in New York City. Burial took place Jan. 7 in Berlin, N.J.
