Common Core forum to be held in Riverhead

East End education advocates have organized a public forum Wednesday to discuss parents and teachers’ concerns over Common Core.

The forum, titled “Our Children Are Not Common: Their Education Shouldn’t Be Either,” is expected to discuss how high-stakes testing, new mandated teacher evaluations, Common Core curriculum and student data storage plans are negatively affecting children.

Special guests scheduled to speak at the free event include: Comsewogue School District Superintendent Joseph Rella, Long Island Opt Out founder Jeanette Deutermann, retired special education teacher Terry Kalb, social worker Mary Calamia, and educator Brian Wasson.

Concerned parents and teachers that have created several Facebook groups are also working together to help organize the event, including:

The public forum will be held at the Long Island Aquarium from 6 to 8 p.m.
