Rescue of Noodle to be featured on ABC

The rescue and recovery of Noodle, the small toothed whale found marooned in a marsh just days before Hurricane Sandy knocked the East Coast, will be featured Saturday morning on ABC’s “Sea Rescue.”

Noodle, the 2-year-old harbor porpoise, was found in a marsh in Brunswick, Maine by children on a school field trip in October 2012.

Marine Mammals of Maine responded to the marooned porpoise, helping transport it to the University of New England Marine Animal Rehabilitation Center in Portland where it was stabilized.

The young male porpoise was unable to float by itself during the first 24-hours of its rescue, so researchers used foam noodles to build a makeshift flotation device to keep him afloat. The modified floaties earned him the name, Noodle.

At 11:30 a.m. Saturday, ABC will chronicle Noodle’s adventure from the marshes of Maine to the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation, home to the only pool large enough to rehabilitate an animal his size in the Northeast.

On Feb. 8., Sea Rescue will feature Roxanne, a Risso’s dolphin, who was also rehabilitated by volunteers at the not-for-profit.
