Suffolk County officials are touting the success of East End Sunday bus service following the first month since expansion.

In December, the county announced plans to extend Sunday service throughout the year starting in January. The S92 line, which runs from Orient Point to East Hampton, and the 10C that connects East Hampton to Montauk previously only operated between Memorial Day and Columbus Day. During the first month the S92 had over 200 passengers each day, county official said Tuesday.

“The extended bus service is off to a good start,” Suffolk County Legislature Jay Schneiderman (I-Montauk) said Tuesday in a press release. “I’m pleased to see residents taking advantage of this very important and much needed service.”

In addition to the two East End routes, the six other county routes that were extended in January saw an “encouraging” amount of ridership, officials said. Throughout the month of January there have been an average of 195 riders on each bus line with an average growth reaching 15%, the press released stated.

Last year, the Suffolk County Legislator approved more than $2 million dollars in state and federal transportation assistance to expand bus services.

Mr. Schneiderman said he hopes to expand Sunday service in the future to additional routes not currently served.
