Private power plant in Greenport applies to renew DEC permits
The curtain is closing on a public comment period as the state Department of Environmental Conservation considers renewing emission permits to allow a privately run power plant to keep operating in Greenport.
The DEC has already “prepared draft permits and has made a tentative determination to approve” the applications submitted by Hawkeye Energy Greenport LLC of Plainview, according to a DEC legal notice of complete application that ran in the Jan. 16 edition of The Suffolk Times.
Hawkeye owns and operates the kerosene-fired facility at 1885 Moore’s Lane, which is unrelated to the Village of Greenport-run municipal power plant to the south, also on Moore’s Lane.
The Hawkeye plant is in a wooded area immediately north of the village’s sewer plant. The plant consists of two 27-megawatt combustion turbines fired on low-sulfur distillate fuel, the legal notice reads.
It operates as a “peaking unit,” providing power to Public Service Electric and Gas (PSEG) during periods of high, or peak, demand.
Representatives for Hawkeye could not be reached for comment.
Written comments on the permit applications must be submitted in writing to Kevin Kispert, NYSDEC, SUNY Stony Brook, 50 Circle Road, Stony Brook, NY 11790 by Monday, Feb. 17.

According to the DEC, any facilities that emit contaminants to the air in New York State must obtain Title V permits.
Permits are good for five years.
The last Title V for the kerosene plant was issued March 2, 2009, and expires March 1, 2014.
